Born June 4, 1975 in Los Angeles, Angelina Jolie Voight has
become one of the 'in' women in Hollywood. Daring to be different, perhaps to
the point of being bizarre, Jolie (incidently meaning "pretty little girl" in
French) has starred in many big budget films of late and has catapulted herself
from model daughter of a famous acting pair to a top billed actress in her own
right.
There are many press accounts though of her having a distant relationship
with her father, the New York Post's Jennifer Tung reports in an interview with
Jolie, mentioning her father's name caused the normally outspoken actress to
fall silent, lose eye contact, and become distant. She does praise her mother
Marcheline Bertrand and brother James Haven Voight, in fact she acted in five films
at the USC School of Cinema, of which her brother directed. Angelina got closer to her
father during the filming of Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, but as she adopted her Cambodian
son Maddox, he said to the media that he thought she had serious mental problems. Angelina
saw this as a threat because Maddox could be taken away from her because of that, and
never spoke to him again.
She first appeared on a film at age 7, on Lookin´ To Get Out, where she only showed up
for a minute, along with her father, who starred the movie. But her first
notable film was the internet ground breaker film Hackers in 1995. Angelina had
her most memorable role in the tv film Gia, which profiled the life of the
bisexual and heroin addict 70s supermodel Gia Carangi, who died from AIDS. At the time, it
has been said that Jolie, who tends to absorb herself in her roles, may have
gotten too much into this one, according to worried friends. Angelina herself had a
girlfriend she was about to marry. It was Jenny Shimizu, one of her co-stars from the cast of Foxfire, in 1996.
Angelina has also said recently that she prefers women over men, but that her relationship
with this girl ended because she didn´t love her as much as she thought.
Her breakout year though for big budget films occurred in 1999, with roles in Girl, Interrupted
the role for which she won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, The Bone Collector,
which also featured Denzel Washington, Gone in 60 Seconds, where it was rumored that she had been caught
nude with, then married, Nicolas Cage, and many other movies that the journalists and
critics hated since the Oscar: Life, Or Something Like It, Original Sin, the Tomb Raider movies,
Beyond Borders, Taking Lives, and more to come.
The sex life of Jolie also may be
considered bizarre. Besides her admitted affection towards death and the
macabre (she said on the 2001 Rolling Stone interview that she had installed an
electric chair on the mansion where she lived with her (then) husband, Billy Bob),
Jolie sports several scars from playing with knives (including an X on
her arm (see picture), a slice on her stomach and a nick on her neck), or as she
puts it "You're young, you're drunk, you're in bed, you have knives; shit happens."
She also has spoken of using knifes in sexual play. Its unknown whether that played
a factor in the recent 1999 divorce of Jonny Lee Miller whom she married in
1995. Although doubtful as the marriage started out in the same fashion, with
Jolie's wedding garb being a white shirt with her husbands name painted across
the back in her own blood.
Besides Miller, she's been romantically linked to Timothy Hutton, whom she met on the set of Playing God in 1997 and she dated for
about a year, Colin Farrell (her co-star in Alexander), Kevin Bacon (co-star in Taking
Lives), and now (2004) she´s been seen back in love cuddling her first husband Jonny
Lee Miller, in a tattoo store where she had the sentence "Know your rights" written on
her middle upper back.
In 2001, after Jonny, Billy Bob Thornton showed up. They had met on the
set of Pushing Tin, but they said on the Los Angeles premiere of Gone In 60 Seconds
that they where in love since before but that they couldn´t hook up because of
"technical issues" (Thorton was married to actress Laura Dern (Jurassic Park) and Angelina
was still married to Miller), at the same place they also made it clear that they had
just had sex on the limo that delivered them to the premiere.
The two married in a small Las Vegas wedding. It was
reported that Angelina checked herself into UCLA for psychological examination
only four days prior to the wedding. This was Angelina´s second marriage and Billy´s
fifth. Not to mention the nearly 20 years of difference between them.
Left behind in this relationship was Laura Dern, who had thought she
was going to marry Billy Bob. Dern's mother told the Enquirer "Billy Bob Thorton
is a real Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. I'm shocked. Billy Bob told me he wants my
daughter to be his wife and I know they've talked about having kids. I don't
know how to make sense out of it." Nevertheless, Angelina claimed it was true
love, saying Billy Bob was the love of her life. She even had his name tattooed on her
arm, right above the dragon. They also shared the infamous pendants with eachother´s
blood on them (Billy Bob wore the one in the picture). Angelina even told her
friends that he was "the biggest in Hollywood" which was especially important since
Angelina said "I love sex! I never get enough, I need it more than anyone I know."
(Later, on 2003, Angelina declared she hadn´t had sex for a whole year.)
Jolie has more than 23 tattoos. The dragon on her arm, the Billy Bob one above it (she
had that one removed in 2003, as you can see on the picture from the BAFTAS), she had
the Chinese symbol for Courage on her arm when she was first married to Miller (and
then had it removed), she had a line designed by her a Billy inside of her arm, but she
had a phrase in Arabian written over it in 2004, she had a blue dragon between the hips
and then a big black cross over it along with the sentence "Quod me nutrit me destruit"
("What nourishes me also destroys me"), a dragon and a window with two tribal designs on
her lower back, the legend "A prayer for the wild at heart kept in cages" by
Tennessee William (her favourite writter) on her left forearm, an H on her wrist for
her brother James Haven and her (ex) boyfriend Timmothy Hutton, the Chinese symbol that
means "death" on the back of her shoulder, a traditional Khmer motif to ward off bad luck,
the number XIII on the back of her left arm, and more recently (February 2004) "Know
your rights" written on the middle of her upper back, next to the neck.
